Understanding Expedited Passport Costs

Expedited PassportOur expedited passport service is a fast-track service for individuals who need their passports quickly due to immediate travel plans. Our expedited passport service reduces the processing time significantly – compared to standard passport applications. Applicants must pay an additional cost and provide proof of their travel urgency, such as, an unexpected death of a loved one or a sudden, unplanned departure date, or sudden changes to flight itineraries, are reasons why you may need to apply for an expedited passport.

The expedited passport process includes filling out application forms, and presenting required documents. Some passport agencies require in-person processing. We are one of the few that does not require in-person process! It’s not always possible to plan your travel plans way in advance. For last-minute or emergency travel, our expedited passport service offers a convenient option.

The U.S. Department of State – Bureau of Consular Affairs handles processing and approving passport applications. Applicants can select from four categories, emergency, urgent travel, expedited, and routine.

The cost of processing passport applications varies depending on the category and the applicant’s age. The category also determines how long it takes to receive your passport by mail or courier.

New passports for adults cost $165. The cost is slightly less at $135 for children. Renewing a passport costs $30. However, an expedited passport has an additional cost.

Expedited Passport Cost vs. Regular Passport Cost

The primary differences between obtaining an expedited passport and a regular passport are processing time and cost. Expedited passports are processed much faster. For example – same-day, 24-hours, a few days, or a few weeks, compared to the many weeks or months for regular passports.

Expedited services come with additional costs, while regular passport processing costs less. Expedited passports require proof of immediate travel plans, whereas regular passports do not have this requirement.

If you are traveling internationally in the next 11 weeks from your passport application date, you can choose to expedite the process. This will shorten the time it takes to receive a new passport to an estimated 5 to 7 weeks.

Note: Only renewal passports can be expedited by mail. If you are applying for a new passport, most passport agencies require you to make an in-person appointment.  We set ourselves apart from our competition by not requiring an in-person appointment!

The expedited passport cost is an additional $60 in addition to the other related costs.

New adult passports cost $225 for adults and $195 for children.

Paying the additional $60 cost will shorten the processing time. However, you must pay attention to your departure date to ensure your passport arrives on time.

A regular passport book costs $165 for adults and $135 for children. For regular passports, you should expect to receive your new passport in 8 to 11 weeks, but it can take longer depending on application processing times.

Green Visa will help you navigate the expedited passport process. To expedite the passport process, you will need to fill out Form DS-11.  Along with the passport form, you will also need to provide proof of identification and proof of U.S. citizenship.

The following documents are acceptable to show proof of identity:

  • Driver’s license or state ID card
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Military ID
  • Government ID card

The following documents are acceptable to show proof of citizenship:

  • Expired US passport
  • Certified birth certificate
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad

You will also need to provide a photo as well.  Green Visa can help you with this.

Expedited Passport Renewal Costs

The expedited passport renewal cost is $30, plus the $60 cost. However, if you also need a passport book, there is an additional $130 cost, bringing the total cost to $220. If you are in need of expedited passport renewal services and do not need a new book, the total is $90.

There are a few steps to follow to expedite your passport renewal:

  • Use Form DS-82
  • Include the additional $60 cost with the application fee. Passport renewal costs are $30.
  • Mark the outside of the envelope “EXPEDITE”

Don’t forget to include any supporting documentation that may be required to renew your passport.

Most applicants for renewal will only need to include their expired passport with their application form. Using USPS Priority Mail Express can help speed up the application process. You should receive your passport within 11 weeks or sooner using U.S. Priority Mail and/or a courier service. These may also add to the total cost of your expedited passport renewal.

Once you acquire your passport (whether new or renewed), it will remain valid for many years. For those over 16 years of age, your passport is valid for 10 years. Passports for children under the age of 16 will need to be renewed every five years.

Pay attention to your passport’s expiration date, because it will affect your travels. If the expiration date is before your return date, you will not be allowed to travel internationally until you renew your passport.
